The highest peak: Hum 587 m

Climate: Mediterranean

Settlements: The town of Vis, the town of Komiža, Rukavac, Milna, Bargujac, Ženka (on the coast) - Podselje, Marine zemlje, Podšpilje,Podstražje, Plisko Polje, Žena glava, Podhumlje

(in the interior of the island).

Language:

Standard  Croatian  Language

Local dialect differing from the standard Croatian Language

 

Currency: Kuna ( 1 kuna= 100 lipa ) coins of 1,2,5,10,20,50 lipas

and 1,2 and 5 kunas are in use and the notes of 5,10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000 kunas.

Foreign currencies are exchanged at the banks, exchange offices, post offices and most tourist agencies, hotels, camps. Euro-cheques can be changed only at the banks. The banks are open from 7 a.m. -  19 p.m., on Saturday till 13p.m.

In major cities some banks on duty are open on Sundays.

 

CREDIT CARDS

In most hotels, restaurants and shops paying by credit cards is welcome (American Express, Diners Club, Eurocard, Mastercard, Visa).

 

TRAVEL DOCUMENTS

Passport or any other identification document acknowledged by an international agreement. Tourists may stay in the country three months at the most.

CUSTOMS:

It is not paid for one's own belongings. Tourists may freely bring in or take out foreign currency. There is a limit for domestic currency: 15000 kunas. It is obligatory to declare worthier technical and professional equipment at the frontier. For bringing animals into the country, a valid veterinary document is necessary. 

 

TAX RETURN FOR FOREIGN CITIZENS:

Tax return is valid for purchased goods for an amount over 500 kunas upon presentation of a Tax Cheque Form on the occasion of leaving the country. The return is possible during the period of six months. Information: The Customs Direction of The Republic of Croatia

HEALTH  INSURANCE OF TOURISTS:

Foreign tourists don't pay medical expenses if a convention of health protection between Croatia and the country they are coming from is being signed. Expenses for health services for persons coming from the countries that haven't signed the convention, are paid directly from the user according to the price-list.

WORKING HOURS:  

Shops are open from 8 a.m. – 20 p.m. on working days, on Saturdays from 8 a.m. -  14 or 15 p.m.; a minor number of shops work in two shifts – from 8-12a.m. and from 16- 20p.m.

Some shops work till 22p.m. on Sundays in summer; in bigger towns even during 24 hours a day. Public services and firms work from 8-16p.m. from Monday till Friday.

 

TELECOMMUNICATIONS:

Post –offices work from 7-19 p.m.; On Saturdays till 13 p.m.; post-offices on duty in bigger towns and those in tourist resorts work till 22 p.m. during summer. Stamps are sold in post-offices and at newspaper stands.

Telephone booths use exclusively telephone chip cards bought in post-offices,newspaper stands, hotels and tourist resorts.

RADIO PROGRAMME  IN FOREIGN LANGUAGES:

On the Cratian Second Radio Programme, after regular news in the Croatian language, HAK will release reports about road conditions in English, German and Italian languages, as well as information for navigation experts several times a day.
